ASL Gesture Recognition Assistant

ASL Assistant is a Python-based program using Open Computer Vision designed to serve as a virtual assistant for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, and non-verbal.

In a society where existing technologies can be typically inaccessible to disabled populations, the ASL Assistant was designed to sync technological shortcuts to support safety, peace-of-mind, and promote independence for its users in the deaf community and beyond.

Using American Sign Language gesture recognition, this Python program hopes to present a simpler alternative to technology such as Amazon’s Alexa in a format that is accessible to those with disabilities.
This program is created help with four basic functions:

1) Automatically sending emails to companions and caregivers
2) Launching a weather website for weather in your area
3) Loading in a family or work Google calendar
4) Displaying and reading reminders set for activities and productivity in Google Docs

All functions are completely customizable to fit the user's preferred email syntax, location, specific Google calendar, and shared documents.
